Mayrhofen skiing

Mayrhofen is part of the superb Zillertal 3000 ski region and has a great variety of ski and snowboard terrain, including glacier skiing and a world-class snow park. Summer skiing is possible on the Hintertux Glacier, just south of Mayrhofen. In Mayrhofen itself, the 2 lifts leaving the resort reach separate sides of the valley.

The Ahornbahn accesses the Ahorn peak, ideal for beginners and families, while the redeveloped Penkenbahn accesses the Mayrhofen Penken ski area, with a huge variety of terrain, the Harakiri ski piste (rated the steepest groomed ski piste in Austria), and a world-famous Snow Park that has produced countless legends in the sport.

Beyond the Penken ski area, it is possible to ski into the Finkenberg ski area and further on to the Lanersbach ski area. Also included on the Zillertal ski pass is the Hintertux Glacier, just south of Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Valley, offering an absolute snow guarantee, year-round skiing, and seriously good scenery.

The glacier also offers great steep skiing and excellent snow quality throughout the winter. Modern lifts and the variety and extent of the terrain make Mayrhofen one of the very best in the region. Mayrhofen resort

Mayrhofen is a reasonably upmarket ski resort with quality hotels and facilities. There are good quality restaurants and some cool, modern bars. The central area features the 2 ski lift base stations which are a couple of minutes’ walk apart, whilst ski hire and après action can also be found in this part of the resort.

The resort is easy to navigate on foot and offers some interesting activities for non-skiers including winter walks, paragliding as well as a train station linking the resort to neighbouring villages, as well as the Innsbruck valley.

There are a number of shops in this central area as well as bars and restaurants. Beyond the main street, Mayrhofen has a good range of hotels, many within easy reach of all the skiing & resort facilities and entertainment. Mayrhofen is a year-round resort and is one of the biggest towns in the valley.

For corporate ski events, the proximity to the skiing, the ease of navigation and the attractions for non-skiers make Mayrhofen a standout destination for corporate ski trips.

After the skiing is done, Mayrhofen boasts some of the best après ski in Austria, with numerous bars and clubs serving up legendary après ski. There are huge crowds at the top and bottom of the Penkenbahn from mid-afternoon – a twist of fate that makes escaping Mayrhofen après ski almost impossible.

For a more chilled après ski scene, the White Lounge at the top of the Ahornbahn offers an igloo complex with a labyrinth of rooms, as well as deck chairs outside to take advantage of the south-facing aspect. DJ’s play in the afternoon and the atmosphere is sublime.

The main street in Mayrhofen is thronged around the base station at lift-closing. For those with the stamina to last the evening, Scotland Yard is on hand to determine unofficial company hierarchies – Scotties is a true institution, a place where company folklore has been written over many, many years.

The annual Snowbombing festival is hugely popular, serving up music, comedy and some serious partying. There are comedy festivals during the winter and the season opening and closing periods can be lively affairs.

The top station of the Ahorn cable car has some fantastic modern spaces, whilst there are a number of old, authentic locations on offer in the resort and on the mountain.
